Looking back over the past 67 years since 1955, it was the initial endeavours of
John Brackenreg (1905-1986) in publishing the work of Australian artists and holding
commercial exhibitions on the walls of Artarmon Galleries which enabled artist and
gallery to co-exist. In the 1960s John launched Darlinghurst Galleries in Crown Street
Sydney and the two galleries began the careers of many well-known artists still loved
by the wider public today. Eventually running a second gallery became difficult and
John concentrated on Artarmon Galleries.
In recent times, parking and other issues have obliged us to close the Artarmon
Galleries and to maintain our presence online through our former city gallery known
as Darlinghurst Galleries.
Although the family remains committed to gallery life: it is Julie, who has been running
the Gallery with Philip, who is keen to take up the more public role in promoting Art
through Darlinghurst Galleries. This will involve occasional exhibitions in pop up
displays but primarily, the artists’ work will be visible online and available for inspection
by arrangement.
We look forward to your continued support and hope that you will always enjoy
artworks and continue to be interested in the selections on our website facilitated by
mail and multi-media communication.
